Identify Your Strongholds

The inner voice tells you who you are supposed to be, regardless if this is who you intend to be or not. We create certain identities for ourselves as human beings. We call these identities “Strongholds.” Identities are those who you and I consider ourselves to be.

If you ask yourself, “What kind of person am I?” you may answer, “I am a kind person” or “I am an intelligent individual.” Usually, this is how you understand your identity to be. How do we create these strongholds? How do these strongholds affect our conversations in life?

The process of creating identities began from childhood. As we grow older, we have adopted ways of being and acting to deal successfully with things that do not go the way we thought they should. We have different ways to explain and to accept such circumstances.

These identities become like strongholds that helped us get all the accomplishments we have achieved. They are called “strongholds” because they do not allow you to be any other way. You are fixed in a certain way. Over time, you get in the grip of these suits that you use these patterns even when they are not necessary.

For example, when people whose stronghold is being hardworking get any result without much hard work, they feel dissatisfied or unaccomplished. They feel they have to produce results through hard work alone. If you view the spiritual implication of this, how will such a person view the theology of salvation and grace? As grace is given by faith in Jesus alone, and not through good works so that no one can boast, how can one feel satisfied with one’s salvation (Ephesians 2:9)? The tendency will be to work hard for one’s salvation by performing good works, won’t it? But this is not what the bible says you should do to be saved.

How can you recognize these strongholds? Strongholds are produced to compensate for failures of being enough of something. The inner voice can sometimes be the inner critic. Whenever we think we are not enough for something, you must remember that this is just an interpretation that you have created. This is not something that you actually are or something that actually happened.

Human beings are fundamentally whole, perfect, and complete. We use strongholds because we do not see our true being. We see ourselves to be lacking in something, thus we see a need to compensate with strongholds.

Another way to view strongholds is when you identify when you say something “needs to be done” in a certain way. This need reveals a fixed frame of reference. This need is a sign of an existing stronghold.
