The Significance of the Fall

Most of the barriers we need to overcome include fear, the lack of guidance, the effect of past hurts, apathy, and even not being given opportunities to grow in the ministry. However, before we can address all these things, we need to go back to the ultimate reason why we are limited in the spiritual realm, and it is because of the Fall of Man.

In the Garden of Eden, God gave man a clear commandment, they are free to eat of any tree of the garden, except from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:16-17). A direct consequence of this fall is man developed the natural tendency to obey Satan, rather than God. Adam and Eve unwittingly gave Satan a legal right to contest God’s authority over mankind. They gave Satan the open door to torment humanity. This consequence is the source of our limitations as human beings, which Jesus ultimately broke through in his work on the cross and in his resurrection. Satan, disguised as a serpent, tempted Eve to disobey God. In Genesis 3:4-5, he deceived her saying, “You will certainly not die.

God knows that when you eat fruit from that tree, you will know things you have never known before. Like God, you will be able to tell the difference between good and evil.” Eve had a choice. She could obey God, or she could obey  Satan. God did not limit her choices to a good tree and a bad tree.  In fact, God said, in His generosity and abundance, “you may eat from any tree in the garden”, even from the tree of life, but there is only one tree they are forbidden to eat from. Eve chose to eat of the forbidden tree. Adam consented and even joined her in disobedience.

The problem is not that we don’t understand the situation about sin. It’s that we don’t like the situation, and the selfishness is manifesting through. We understand the choices, but our entitled selves think we should have more choices.

What are the common mindsets people have about sin? They only want to taste the fruit of the tree to see if it is good, as if God would withhold something good from people. They want to choose another tree to avoid, as if God has no valid reasons from commanding them not to partake of that tree. It’s unfair to be in this kind of straitjacket, as if God is not putting up barriers to protect them. They also don’t want to be told what they can or cannot do, but God knows best. To submit to God’s will is to give up their rights and free will; it’s called Lordship. Finally, if God really loved us, He wouldn’t limit us, when the truth is no one can love us more than God loves us.
