The prophet Samuel interceded for the people of Israel. He did it by making a sacrifice. While the sacrifice was burning with the smoke of it, his prayers ascended into heaven on behalf of Israel.

⁹ So Samuel took a sucking lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord; Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. ¹⁰ As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel; but the Lord thundered with a mighty voice that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion; and they were routed before Israel. (1 Samuel 7:9-10 NRSV)

Samuel offered a burnt-offering — a whole burnt-offering, to the Lord.  Samuel made intercession with a sacrifice. We can only intercede when we are willing to sacrifice. The sacrifice costs us something.

Samuel prayed as he sacrificed. You must do both. 1) You must be in constant communication with the Lord. 2) You must also be willing to back up your talk with your walk. His prayer without the sacrifice would not have been so prevalent. The sacrifice without prayer would not have been an empty shadow. Together, the prayer and the sacrifice teach us how we can expect God to answer those prayers made in faith, in Christ’s name.

How did God respond to the prophet’s sacrifice? God gave him a gracious answer. The Lord heard him. Samuel asked and God granted it. The Israelites had victory in the battle against the Philistines. The power of God was highly magnified because of this incident. When God answers us, when we sacrifice our offerings on our spiritual altars, He is also glorified.
